What is church and why go?

As a Christian it’s essential to understand that “church” or “ecclesia” is not just a building; it’s a vibrant body of believers coming together to worship, learn, and support one another in faith. The church is a living, breathing community of individuals who share a common belief in Jesus Christ. Let’s explore the biblical foundations for gathering, the role of the church as the body of believers, and the significance of plugging into your church community.

Biblical Foundations for Gathering

The Bible lays a strong foundation for the importance of gathering together as believers. In Hebrews 10:24-25, we are encouraged with these words:

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

This passage reminds us that coming together is not just a suggestion but a vital part of our Christian walk. It provides us with opportunities to encourage one another, grow in our faith, and fulfill the commandment to love one another.

Church as a Body of Believers

The church is often described in the Bible as the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). Each member has unique gifts and roles, contributing to the overall health and function of the church. When we gather, we engage in three main activities: worship, teaching, and fellowship.

Worship

Worship is a central part of our gatherings. In Psalm 100:1-2, we are called to worship with joy:

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.”

Worship allows us to express our love and gratitude to God, acknowledging His greatness and presence among us. It’s a time to focus our hearts and minds on Him and to unify our voices in praise.

Teaching

Teaching is another vital aspect of our gatherings. The Bible encourages us to grow in knowledge and understanding. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, we read:

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Through teaching, we learn more about God’s Word and how to apply it to our lives. This knowledge equips us to face challenges and to live out our faith more effectively.

Fellowship

Fellowship is about building relationships within the church community. Acts 2:42 emphasizes this beautifully:

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

Fellowship provides us with the support and encouragement we need in our spiritual journey. It’s an opportunity to share our lives, pray for one another, and build lasting friendships.

The Importance of Plugging into Your Church

Being an active part of your church is essential for your spiritual growth and for the health of the church community. When you plug into your church, you contribute to its mission and ministry.

Active Involvement

Being involved in church activities allows you to use your gifts and talents for God’s glory. Ephesians 4:11-12 states:

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.”

By serving in various capacities, you help build up the church and encourage others in their faith.

Community Support and Accountability

The church is designed to be a support system for believers. In Galatians 6:2, we are reminded:

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

When we come together, we can share our struggles and joys, offering help and encouragement to one another. This sense of community strengthens our faith and provides a safe space to grow.

Conclusion

Going to church is about more than just attending a service; it’s about being part of a vibrant community that worships, learns, and supports one another. As you engage in this journey, remember the importance of gathering, serving, and building relationships within your church family.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of the church and the opportunity to gather with other believers. Help me to understand the importance of being part of this community. Guide me as I seek to plug into my church, using my gifts to serve and encourage others. May I grow in my faith through worship, teaching, and fellowship.

In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.
