Doubts can feel isolating and overwhelming, but they are a part of the human experience, especially in our walk with God. Let’s explore what Scripture says about doubt and how we can navigate through it.
1. Acknowledging Doubt is Normal
First and foremost, it’s essential to recognize that having doubts is completely normal. Even the most faithful followers of Christ have experienced moments of uncertainty. In Matthew 28:17, after Jesus’ resurrection, we read, “When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.” If the disciples, who walked with Jesus and witnessed His miracles, had doubts, we can be assured that we are not alone in our struggles.
2. Bringing Our Doubts to God
The second step in dealing with doubt is to bring our uncertainties to God. He is not afraid of our questions or our struggles. In fact, He invites us to come to Him. In James 1:5, we are reminded, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.” God desires for us to seek Him with our questions, and He is faithful to provide guidance and clarity.
3. The Example of Doubting Thomas
One of the most well-known stories about doubt is that of Thomas, one of Jesus’ disciples. After the resurrection, Thomas doubted the reports of Jesus being alive. In John 20:25, he said, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
However, when Jesus appeared to Thomas, He lovingly addressed his doubts. In John 20:27, Jesus said, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Jesus met Thomas in his doubt and offered him the evidence he needed to believe. This story reminds us that God meets us where we are, even in our moments of uncertainty.
4. The Importance of Faith
While doubt is natural, it is essential to remember that faith is a choice we make. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” We may not have all the answers or understanding, but we can still choose to trust in God’s character and His promises. In Mark 9:24, a father seeking healing for his son cried out to Jesus, “I believe; help my unbelief!” This prayer acknowledges both belief and doubt, and it’s a beautiful reminder that we can bring our struggles to God.
5. Growing Through Doubt
Finally, doubts can lead to growth if we allow them to. They can prompt us to seek deeper understanding and a more profound relationship with God. 1 Peter 5:10 encourages us, saying, “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” God can use our doubts and struggles to build our faith and strengthen our relationship with Him.
Conclusion
In conclusion, doubt is a part of our spiritual journey, and it doesn’t have to be a barrier between us and God. Instead, we can acknowledge our doubts, bring them to God, seek His wisdom, and choose to trust in His goodness. Remember that Jesus is patient and loving, ready to meet you in your uncertainty.
Prayer
Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we come before You with our doubts and uncertainties. Help us to bring our questions to You, knowing that You desire to guide us. Strengthen our faith, even when we struggle, and remind us that You are always with us. May we find peace and assurance in Your promises.
In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
