What exactly is the Gospel?

The Gospel is the foundation of everything we believe as Christians. It is the “good news” that changes everything. In this chapter, we’ll break down what the Gospel means, why salvation through Jesus Christ is at the heart of our faith, and why Christians believe that Jesus is the only way to eternal life with God.

What is the Gospel?

The Gospel can be understood in four key movements: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration.

  1. Creation

The Bible begins with the truth that God created everything—He made the heavens, the earth, and everything in them, including us. God created humanity in His image, and everything was perfect.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.” — Genesis 1:27

  1. Fall

Unfortunately, sin entered the world when Adam and Eve disobeyed God. This disobedience broke the perfect relationship humanity had with God, and sin separated us from Him. Sin has spread to all people, and we all face the consequences of that separation.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23

  1. Redemption

But God, in His incredible love, made a way to redeem us. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to live a perfect life and die on the cross to take the punishment for our sins. Through Jesus’ sacrifice, our relationship with God can be restored.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23

  1. Restoration

Through faith in Jesus, we are restored to a right relationship with God. One day, Jesus will return to fully restore all of creation to its original perfection, and those who believe in Him will live with Him forever.

“He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’” — Revelation 21:5

Salvation through Jesus Christ

The heart of the Gospel is that salvation is a gift from God. We cannot earn it by doing good deeds or trying to be perfect; it’s something we receive through grace and faith.

  • Grace and Faith

Grace means that God gives us something we don’t deserve—eternal life and forgiveness of sins. Faith means we trust in what Jesus did for us on the cross and believe that He is the way to salvation.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” — Ephesians 2:8-9

  • Repentance and New Life in Christ

When we believe in Jesus, we also repent, which means we turn away from our old, sinful ways and begin to live a new life in Him. God gives us a new heart and a new purpose.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” — Acts 3:19

Why Christians Believe in Christ

Christians believe in Jesus because He is the Son of God—fully God and fully man—who came to save us. His life, death, and resurrection are the foundation of our faith, and we believe that He is the only way to have eternal life with God.

  • Jesus as the Son of God

Jesus wasn’t just a good teacher or a prophet; He is God Himself who came to live among us. His miracles and His teachings reveal that He is the Son of God.

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” — John 1:14

  • His Life, Death, and Resurrection

Jesus lived a perfect life, showing us how to live in obedience to God. But more importantly, He died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins. Three days later, He rose from the dead, proving that He has power over sin and death. This resurrection gives us hope that we, too, will have eternal life if we believe in Him.

“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.” — 1 Peter 3:18“He is not here; he has risen!” — Luke 24:6

  • Why Jesus is the Only Way to Salvation

Many people wonder if there are other ways to God, but the Bible makes it clear that Jesus is the only way. He is the only one who could take the punishment for our sins because He was without sin.

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” — John 14:6

Jesus is the one who bridges the gap between a holy God and sinful humanity.

Through Him, we have hope, forgiveness, and eternal life.

Conclusion

This is just the beginning of your journey with Christ. As you continue reading, keep reflecting on what you’ve learned about the Gospel. Remember, it’s not just a story; it’s the power of God for your salvation and the foundation for everything you believe.
