What Does it Mean to Be "Born Again?"

The phrase “born again” can be a bit confusing, especially if you're hearing it for the first time. You might wonder, “How can I be born again when I’ve already been born once?” In this chapter, we’ll explore what it really means to be born again, where the term comes from, and why it’s not just a metaphor. We’ll also look at the difference between simply attending church and being truly born again into the body of believers.

Where Does “Born Again” Come From?

The term "born again" comes directly from the Bible. In the book of John, Jesus explains the concept to a religious leader named Nicodemus. Nicodemus came to Jesus one night with questions about spiritual matters, and Jesus responded with something that completely surprised him:

"Jesus replied, 'Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.'” — John 3:3

Nicodemus was puzzled, asking, "How can someone be born when they are old? Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!" (John 3:4). Jesus explained that He wasn’t talking about a physical rebirth, but a spiritual one. When you are born again, you are born of the Spirit.

"Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.’" — John 3:5-6

What Does It Mean?

To be born again means to experience a spiritual rebirth. It’s a transformation that happens when you believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior. When you repent of your sins and put your faith in Jesus, God gives you a new heart, a new mind, and a new life. You become a new person spiritually, even though your physical body remains the same.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" — 2 Corinthians 5:17

Being born again means that God is now at work inside of you, changing you from the inside out. You begin to see things differently, think differently, and live differently because God’s Spirit lives within you. You are no longer spiritually dead, but spiritually alive.

It's Not a Metaphor

While the phrase "born again" may sound symbolic, it’s not just a metaphor. It’s a real and life-changing transformation. When we’re born again, it’s like starting over, but this time with God at the center of our lives. The Holy Spirit enters into our hearts, making us spiritually alive and giving us the power to live in obedience to God.

Before being born again, we are spiritually separated from God because of our sin. But when we place our faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit gives us new life. This isn’t just a fresh start or a new mindset—it’s a completely new spiritual reality.

"But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved." — Ephesians 2:4-5

The Difference Between Attending Church and Being Born Again

Some people might think that being a Christian means going to church, but there’s a big difference between attending church and being born again. While going to church is important, it’s not what makes someone a Christian. You can go to church every week and still not experience the transformation that comes from being born again.

When you're born again, you become part of the body of believers—the true church. This is not about sitting in a building on Sundays, but about being spiritually united with other Christians as a member of Christ’s body.

"Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." — 1 Corinthians 12:27

Being born again means that you are not just a participant in a religious activity, but that you have a personal relationship with Jesus. You’re no longer spiritually dead, but spiritually alive and connected to God and other believers in a deep, meaningful way.

How Do I Know if I’ve Been Born Again?

If you’ve repented of your sins and put your trust in Jesus, you are born again. You don’t need to earn this new life—it’s a gift from God. The evidence of being born again is that your life begins to change. You’ll start to notice a growing love for God, a desire to read the Bible, and a heart that wants to obey God’s commands.

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." — Ezekiel 36:26

If you’re still unsure, take it to God in prayer. Ask Him to confirm in your heart whether you’ve truly been born again. The Bible says the Spirit of God will testify with your spirit that you are His child.

"The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children." — Romans 8:16

Conclusion

Being born again is the foundation of your new life in Christ. It’s a real, spiritual transformation that changes everything about who you are and how you live. As you continue to grow in your faith, remember that you’re not alone—God is with you, and His Spirit is working in you to make you more like Jesus every day.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of being born again. I recognize that I need a spiritual rebirth, and I ask You to change me from the inside out. Help me to fully understand what it means to be a new creation in Christ. I surrender my heart, my mind, and my life to You. Give me the strength to follow You every day and live out this new life You’ve given me. Help me to not just attend church but to be fully connected to the body of believers. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who makes me alive in You.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
