As a new believer, you may be wondering what it means to follow Jesus and how you can share your faith with others. One of the most important aspects of being a Christian is participating in the Great Commission—Jesus’ command to spread the Gospel. In this chapter, we will explore what the Great Commission entails, why evangelism is vital to our Christian lives, and practical ways you can share the good news with others.

Jesus’ Command to “Go and Make Disciples”

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus gives His followers a clear and powerful command:

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20, NIV)

Understanding the Command

  1. Go: This implies action and initiative. Jesus is not asking us to stay passive; He is sending us out into the world.

  2. Make Disciples: Discipleship is more than just sharing the Gospel; it involves guiding others in their faith journey, teaching them to live according to Jesus' teachings.

  3. Baptizing: This act signifies commitment and identification with Christ. It’s an outward sign of an inward faith.

  4. Teaching: We are called to help others grow in their understanding of God’s Word, fostering a deeper relationship with Him.

Scripture Reference: Acts 1:8 (NIV) - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” This verse reminds us that we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfill this command.

Why Evangelism is Essential to Christian Life

Evangelism is not just a task for church leaders or missionaries; it’s a vital part of being a follower of Christ. Here’s why it matters:

1.     Obedience to Christ: By sharing the Gospel, we are obeying Jesus' command. Our willingness to spread the good news demonstrates our love for Him and for others.

2.     Love for Others: Evangelism is rooted in love. When we share the Gospel, we offer others the hope and salvation we have received. We want others to experience the joy of knowing Christ.

3.     Building the Kingdom: Every time someone accepts Jesus, we contribute to the growth of God’s Kingdom. Evangelism is a way to participate in God’s redemptive work in the world.

4.     Personal Growth: Sharing your faith challenges you to grow spiritually. It deepens your understanding of the Scriptures and helps you rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance.

Scripture Reference: Romans 10:14-15 (NIV) - “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?” This passage highlights the importance of sharing the message of Christ.

Practical Ways to Share the Gospel

Now that you understand the importance of evangelism, let’s explore some practical ways to share your faith with others:

1.     Live Out Your Faith: Your actions speak louder than words. Live in a way that reflects Christ's love, kindness, and integrity. People are drawn to the Gospel when they see it in action.

2.     Share Your Story: Personal testimonies are powerful. Share how Jesus has changed your life and what He means to you. Your story can resonate with others who may be seeking hope.

3.     Use Scripture: Familiarize yourself with key Bible verses that clearly present the Gospel, such as John 3:16, Romans 3:23, and Ephesians 2:8-9. These verses can help articulate the message of salvation effectively.

4.     Invite Others to Church: Bringing someone to a service or a small group can be an excellent way for them to hear the Gospel in a supportive environment.

5.     Engage in Conversations: Be open to discussing faith with friends, family, or co-workers. Ask questions and listen actively to their thoughts about spirituality.

6.     Pray for Opportunities: Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you in finding opportunities to share your faith. Look for moments when you can talk about Jesus or encourage others spiritually.

Scripture Reference: 1 Peter 3:15 (NIV) - “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” This verse encourages you to be ready to share your faith with confidence and grace.

Conclusion

As we conclude this chapter on the Great Commission and evangelism, it's essential to recognize the vital role you play as a follower of Christ. Each of us is called to be a witness, sharing the hope and salvation found in Jesus with those around us. This call is not limited to a select few; it is an invitation extended to every believer.

When you hear Jesus' words to "Go and make disciples," remember that this mission begins right where you are. Your everyday interactions, conversations, and relationships are opportunities to reflect Christ's love and grace. You may feel apprehensive or uncertain about sharing your faith, but take comfort in knowing that God equips you for the task.

In Isaiah 6:8, we find a powerful response to God's call:

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’”

Like Isaiah, you can respond to God's call with a willing heart. This simple yet profound declaration is a reminder that your willingness to serve can make a significant impact in the lives of others.

As you step out in faith, remember that you are not alone. The Holy Spirit empowers you, guides you, and gives you the courage to share your story and the message of the Gospel. Trust in Him, and let your light shine brightly in a world that desperately needs hope and truth.

Go forth with the assurance that God is with you, and embrace the adventure of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Your willingness to be a vessel for His message can transform lives and bring glory to His name.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible privilege of being part of Your Great Commission. Help me to understand the importance of sharing the Gospel with others. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, guiding me in my conversations and actions. Grant me boldness and wisdom as I seek to share my faith. I pray for the hearts of those around me to be open to Your message of hope and salvation. May my life reflect Your love, and may I be a vessel for Your truth.

In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
